On Monday, the whole world watched while one of France’s oldest buildings and cultural landmarks, Notre-Dame de Paris, went up in flames.

The news has gripped the whole world while sparking a wave of posts everywhere on social media with people sharing their shock at this unexpected incident. For centuries, the building has been considered the heart of Catholic life in France and an incredibly popular tourist attraction.

Notre-Dame Will Be Rebuilt

The fire, which was reportedly started during renovation work, has done extensive damage to the building’s roof and spire. After fully extinguishing the fire, firefighters managed to save the landmark’s main structure.

The cathedral was initially started in the 12th century and has stood the test of time through revolutions and socio-economic cycles. The unfortunate incident has brought together not only the French, but the whole world.

In an official statement, French President Macron announced that the country will be starting the process of rebuilding Notre-Dame. A donations campaign has been made public, while French prominent figures Francois-Henri Pinault and Bernard Arnault already pledged €300 million towards the cause.

Donations via Bitcoin

Following the announcement, French cryptocurrency journalist Grégory Raymond has seen an opportunity to highlight Bitcoin’s advantage as a borderless payment system and subsequently started a donation campaign.

Raymond set up a Bitcoin wallet to collect donations, which he claims will go towards renovating the famous cathedral. The proposition has been well-received in the community and could gain traction with cryptocurrency enthusiasts.

Though Bitcoin donations will undoubtedly pale in comparison to aid arriving in more traditional forms, the market-leading cryptocurrency may see an increased awareness as a borderless currency capable of being used for the greater good.
