Note that this is not the first time Trump has spoken out against Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies in general. In general, his arguments are quite simple, and they do not take technology at the heart of digital assets into account in any way. The Donald does not accept any currencies that compete with the dollar. The former president wants the US currency to remain the main global currency for the entire economy. Read more about his position in a separate piece.

What Trump thinks about Bitcoin

When asked about his wife’s initiative, Donald responded with enthusiasm. Here’s a line from the legendary politician and businessman in which he commented on Melania’s new idea.

She’s going to make it work. She has a rich imagination.

Accordingly, Donald has no preconceived notions about the subject. One would probably not expect any other response about the NFT given his wife's initiative from Trump.

However, anything that deals only with cryptocurrencies is repulsive to the former president. Here’s his quote on the subject, published in Decrypt.

I’ve never liked it [crypto] as much as I like owning a dollar. I’ve never been a big fan of cryptocurrencies, but they’re getting bigger and bigger, with no one regulating that growth. I want our currency to be the dollar.

That said, Trump does not deny that the massive adoption of cryptocurrencies around the world could indeed lead to a revolution in finance.

I don’t want to allow other forms of currency to exist. All of this could cause a huge upheaval, the scale of which would be unprecedented. [The cryptorevolution] would turn the boom in technology into a childish babble in its wake. I think it’s quite dangerous.

By upheaval, Donald is probably referring to possible changes in the traditional economy. And they do seem obvious to anyone who understands the characteristics of decentralised digital assets. At the very least, regular bank users will no longer have to pay huge fees for international transfers thanks to crypto. If you send USDT from centralized exchanges via the Tron network, the fee for sending is just one dollar. Naturally, this is more profitable than paying a hefty percentage on a bank transfer.

The former president first publicly expressed his dislike of Bitcoin and altcoins on Twitter. Shortly after the event, former White House adviser Anthony Scaramucci said that Trump’s tweet was probably not even written by him, but by one of his subordinates who maintained the account. However, all that information has now faded into oblivion and only screenshots remain of the tweet – after Donald left office, it was blocked on Twitter.

Meanwhile, Melania Trump’s NFT has so far failed to garner huge traction among investors. The collection of unique tokens has been created on the Solana blockchain and is accompanied by a drawing of eyes by artist Marc-Antoine Coulomb. The starting price of 1 SOL at the time of writing has not yet changed. Given the altcoin’s exchange rate, that’s almost $190.

Melania’s Vision

Such a price level for NFT is quite modest. As an example, we can recall the value of tokens from the Bored Ape Yacht Club line, the minimum price of which the day before was ahead of the corresponding figure of the famous Cryptopunks. As of today, the value of representatives of the BAYC collection is 53.89 ETH, which is the equivalent of 220 thousand dollars.

Melania Trump plans to issue even more unique tokens in the future, stating that some of the proceeds from her initiative will go towards “helping children in foster care”.

We think Trump's point of view is too simple to pay attention to. The politician's arguments boil down to his desire to see the US dollar as the world's main currency. And if that is threatened, then it deserves criticism.

In doing so, the Donald is not taking into account any technological advantages of digital assets in the form of immutable blockchain, limited issuance and other perks. Although there is a possibility that this will change in the future - especially if a member of the Trump family suddenly becomes interested in crypto.
