It should be noted that references to Jack Dorsey’s possible resignation have been heard for some time. In particular, the entrepreneur personally stated in June 2021 that “if he wasn’t at Square or Twitter, he’d be working on Bitcoin”. That is, we are talking about popularizing the first cryptocurrency with various new services or devices. Read more about Dorsey’s statements in a separate piece.

What is known about the new Twitter CEO?

As a reminder, Dorsey is a well-known Bitcoin supporter who has publicly criticised altcoins. What’s more, Dorsey’s other company, payment platform Square, only allows BTC purchases on its Cash App. Well, Square’s development arm has been working on its own decentralised exchange for Bitcoin for quite some time now, which will also allow it to accept fiat money.

Twitter’s new CEO Parag Agrawal

According to an anonymous source inside Twitter who shared the information with Decrypt journalists, Agrawal’s faith in cryptocurrencies is definitely as much as Dorsey’s love of Bitcoin. The company’s new CEO is heavily involved in the development of the decentralised Bluesky protocol and is a frequent guest in the creation department of other cryptocurrency projects from Twitter. Here’s a rejoinder from an anonymous source.

Parag is an integral member of Bluesky, so it’s safe to say he believes in cryptocurrencies. And even if he didn’t, Twitter needs to grow its audience and engagement, and cryptocurrencies are a very important community for that.

One of Agrawal’s tweets about crypto

There is one big difference between Dorsey and Agrawal – while the former has been a public figure for a very long time, Parag has barely spoken in public and only mentioned Bitcoin once on Twitter back in 2019. In total, the new CEO made just 10 tweets and 13 retweets for the whole of 2021, with most of them not related to the topic of cryptocurrencies.

Agrawal could open the door for Twitter to embrace other blockchains, not just Bitcoin. His cryptocurrency team includes people with connections in various projects. Among them, for example, are former Zcash developer Jay Graber and former vice president of the Tendermint Core project Tess Rinearson. Agrawal himself may not be as strong a Bitcoin fan as Dorsey, but he certainly has a connection to the blockchain technology.

Amid Jack Dorsey’s resignation, there was another development on Twitter: hacker Jane Wong, known for finding “hidden” features in big company apps, has added an Etherium wallet to the list of available donation options on her Twitter account. As a reminder, the social platform officially only gives the option to donate money to a Bitcoin address. Here’s Wong’s quote on the matter.

This feature has been in the app’s code since at least September. I don’t think it’s available to most users. I did a bit of “wizardry” to add the Etherium address to my account.

We checked the information: the Etherium wallet does indeed appear on the Wong page. Here’s our screenshot.

As a reminder, the ability to donate coins is only available for iOS users of Twitter for now, although the company plans to release the feature for Android users as well. So far, there has been no official news about the integration of payments in Etherium. Incidentally, this very fact suggests that Dorsey is not as maximalist about Bitcoin as was previously thought. Alternatively, the executive’s resignation was known in advance.

We believe the company will continue to support cryptocurrencies anyway, as the platform has one of the most active and massive blockchain communities. As such, abandoning Twitter's set course would not be beneficial for traffic reasons. Well, since the new head of the company is blockchain-related, this scenario is unlikely to happen.
