It should be noted that Dogecoin project representatives regularly comment on what is happening in the digital assets niche, and not always in a good context. In particular, back in the summer of 2021, DOGE co-founder Jackson Palmer criticized the entire cryptocurrency industry. At the time, he claimed that the coins were being used solely to increase the fortunes of its fans through tax evasion. The fans of digital assets are allegedly attracted only by the "artificial scarcity" underlying many of the coins.

Palmer’s point of view was predictably disagreed with. In particular, Coinbase exchange chief Brian Armstrong noted that crypto could rather be described as a breath of fresh air for people who are tired of government actions. Overall, Armstrong’s response sounded more than convincing.

Now, however, another Dogecoin spokesperson has backed the coin niche. And on top of that, he recommended that Mozilla representatives should not go along with the crowd.

Mozilla’s minuses

As a reminder, the negative comment was even published by Mozilla co-founder Jamie Zawinski, who soon left the project. His words seem to have made enough of an impression on the developers – they soon announced a suspension of crypto donations due to concerns about the impact on the environment. Naturally, all this was accompanied by criticism from Twitter users, who are not particularly versed in the world of digital assets, as you could tell from their comments.

According to Decrypt, this time it wasn’t environmentalists who started criticising the organisation, but cryptocurrency fans. Here’s how Billy Marcus reacted to it on his Twitter.

Thank you for going after stupid internet reactionaries. Wait until these guys learn about the evils of producing paper dollars and an entire banking infrastructure. I’m sure they’ll be shocked at their own environmental impact themselves.

That is, the developer of Dogecoin has made it clear that creating, using and transporting even the familiar dollars requires a huge expenditure of electricity. However, critics of cryptocurrencies, NFT tokens and other innovations are simply unaware of this.

The stumbling block is the same: the Proof-of-Work mining algorithm, which incentivises miners to continually build up the processing power of their devices so that they remain profitable due to the increasing complexity of mining. In practice, this principle leads to enormous power consumption. For example, the Bitcoin network’s power consumption is already comparable to that of entire countries in a year.

However, we do support Marcus' point of view: at least Mozilla has accepted crypto for donations before, but this has not provoked serious resistance from conservationists. Apparently, they simply didn't know about it, so they criticised something else. In general, this incident is a prime example of how harsh the reaction of a crowd that is not fully aware of a certain issue can be.

We want to believe that Mozilla representatives will reconsider their current decision, continue to stand their ground and resume support for cryptocurrencies - or at least those coins that are based on the Proof-of-Stake mining algorithm. Otherwise, the industry is unlikely to grow at the same pace, as critics are bound to find new reasons to make their claims. But taking the bait from the disgruntled is obviously not a good choice for a software company that is building software and is focused on the future.
