Theory and Practice".

The whole process of mining Bitcoin on your own can be divided into three steps: preparing your computer, creating a wallet, and the actual start of mining.

Without completing the previous stage, there is no point in moving on to the next one.

Computer for mining cryptocurrency

Any computer will do for you: desktop or laptop.

The easiest operating system to use is Windows. Mining on Mac is practically not an option. If you are a happy Linux user, you probably know how to mine better than we do.

The type of internet connection does not matter either. The important thing is that the connection is stable, and whether the speed is 100 Mbit/s or 512 Kbit/s doesn’t matter. A computer can connect to the network via cable, Wi-Fi or a USB whistle. It doesn’t really matter, either.

Mining on a home PC

The only and most important requirement is that you need a good video card, namely a video card with at least 6GB of internal memory. The most budget video cards which meet the requirements for mining are Nvidia 1060 6GB or AMD RX 480 8 GB.

Of course, the better the video card, the more expensive it is and the more money it can bring in. Which video card makes the most money? The answer is in the link.

There is an opinion that home computer is not meant for mining: video card and other accessories wear out, lose their warranty and so on. In fact, there is no difference between a mining farm and a home computer. Both use the same components: motherboard, processor, RAM, hard disk and even a video card. The only difference is that miners install not just one video card, but six or eight or more, as well as an open case and sometimes additional fans for better cooling.

A video card usually comes with a two-year warranty, and the manufacturer can’t deny you a warranty if you’ve been mining rather than playing games.

Mining on a laptop

Laptops are a little more complicated because laptop graphics cards are often less powerful than desktop graphics cards. The requirement for a laptop graphics card is exactly the same as for a desktop computer: graphics card memory must equal or exceed 6GB. Finding such laptops is not always easy, but over the past 3 years, laptops with 6GB graphics cards have been released in abundance. As an example, consider the Dell G5-5590 with NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 or the Lenovo Legion with 1660Ti Mobile.

If you’re going to be mining on a laptop for a long time, be sure to think about its cooling. In laptops, all the components are placed next to each other in a small enclosure. If the video card overheats, it may also cause other components to overheat. Sooner or later they can all fail.

Creating Your Personal Bitcoin Wallet

This step is very important. Understand that in cryptocurrencies you are alone against the world. If you lose your wallet, no one can help you. Losing a Bitcoin wallet is equal to losing cash, even worse. Cash is sometimes recovered, no one can recover Bitcoin.

Let’s use the Coinomi wallet. There are many other wallets, and Coinomi doesn’t pay us for its advertising – it’s just a time-tested wallet. In addition to reliability, this wallet is available for any operating system, including Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android.

For mining, it does not matter where the wallet is located. It can be on a phone or a computer. The wallet can be on the same computer that will be used for mining, or it can be on any other device – it does not matter.

Let’s say you decide to install the wallet on Windows. Here is a detailed guide to the process.

Downloading the Windows version.

Create a new wallet using the “Create a new wallet” button.

The most important step! You need to securely save the phrase to restore the wallet (mnemonic phrase), writing it on a piece of paper. Electronic media is not suitable - much less a device with internet access. This phrase can be used to restore your wallet if necessary.

Once again. This is important! This set of words contains all your money. Take care of it and do not show it to anyone. You can delete Coinomi from your computer, but with this phrase you can restore your wallet again.

Here is an example of so-called mnemonic or cid phrase

In the next stage you will be asked to check whether you have saved the phrase well or not. You can skip this step, although it is better to double-check the mnemonic phrase.

Create a password for your wallet. Of course, you should choose a strong password, not qwertyasdfg.

Coinomi is a multi-currency wallet, which means you can store not only Bitcoin with it. However, in this case that’s what we need. Check the box next to Bitcoin, then click Next to continue.

There’s not much left to do – look at the wallet address itself. Click on Bitcoin.

If you decide to install the wallet on your phone the process is exactly the same. It is shown here with screenshots so you don’t get confused.

The big advantage of Coinomi is that you can use the same wallet on multiple devices. You need to change your phone or delete everything from your computer: no problem, you can always restore your wallet on another device yourself.

Start Bitcoin mining on Windows

Download archive for quick start from 2Miners pool. This is not some random link: you can always find it on the pool website.

Unzip the file, the password for 2Miners archive - without any dots at the end and capital letters.

Password from 2Miners pool archive

Open the Setup folder and go to the Nvidia or AMD folder, depending on the company of your video card.

Right click on eth-pool.bat and select edit with notepad. If not, first open notepad and then select eth-pool.bat within it.

Contents of the Nvidia folder in the archive

Copy the address of your Bitcoin wallet we created in previous step bc1qzdnd377m8jl6t79xkph8vvt6fkx4a8ntrnxz67 and paste it after the word user instead of the standard wallet listed there. You can leave the word RIG_ID and a dot before it or remove it altogether. This is name of your farm in pool, it has no effect on income.

Save this file. Then run it.

Launch the cryptocurrency miner.

Hooray, it is now mining. It will run as long as the window with the miner will be open. If you close it, no problem, you can always start eth-pool.bat again and the process will continue.

How much can a video card earn by mining per month

We have not discussed the important questions: Where is my Bitcoin now? How to get it? When will it be paid out? How much am I owed?

Let’s start with an easy one. To see your mining stats, you need to copy your wallet address bc1qzdnd377m8jl6t79xkph8vvt6fkx4a8ntrnxz67 and type it in the search box at the very top of the 2Miners.com pool. This will take you to your stats page. If you did not see it immediately after starting the miner program, it is normal. Usually you have to wait 5-10 minutes.

Entering an address on the 2Miners pool

To estimate how much cryptocurrency you can earn, use the 2CryptoCalc calculator. For example, you have an Nvidia 2070 video card. Go to the calculator website and put a one next to that video card. Below is the yield of mining on such video card – $1.85 as of today.

2CryptoCalc calculator interface

$1.85 per day is good, but how do you get it now? The mining pool has a minimum payout amount. At the moment, this amount is the equivalent of 0.005 ETH, which at the current exchange rate equals $15. Accordingly, you need to mine for one week to receive your first payout. You can monitor your progress on your stats page on the pool.

Ethereum or Bitcoin mining – which one to choose?

Advanced miners remember that it is kind of impossible to mine Bitcoin on video cards anymore. And the most attentive of you may have noticed a catch too. For example, in screenshot from calculator in previous chapter there is icon of Ethereum cryptocurrency, not Bitcoin.

How could this be? A hoax? Not at all!

Ethereum is the most profitable cryptocurrency to mine on video cards, so it is Ethereum that you mine when you are mining. Then, the 2Miners mining pool exchanges Ethereum for Bitcoin without any commission and pays out BTC coins to your wallet.

To be precise, you mine Ethereum and get paid in Bitcoin. It's a symbiosis of the world's two most important cryptocurrencies.

When will video card mining end?

Many of you have heard that video card mining is about to end. We have heard such phrases ourselves for the last five years. However, the facts are that the amount of mining capacity in the world is growing all the time, and it is happening in leaps and bounds.

At the beginning of 2021, video card mining reached its peak, and no one believed there would be more miners. There were simply not enough video cards in the world, and factories could not cope with the growing interest in them. Despite this, in just one year the number of video cards involved in mining had tripled!

The complexity of mining Etherium

However, this time around there is a good chance that video card mining will no longer be profitable. This is because Ethereum, the most important cryptocurrency to mine on video cards, is planning to abandon video card mining in 2022 and switch to the so-called Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism. Whether this will actually happen or not, no one knows. In the worst-case scenario, there are other cryptocurrencies to mine on video cards. Read about them in a separate article.

Our advice is to start mining cryptocurrency now, before the train leaves. Treat it as an experiment that will give you invaluable knowledge and experience. Of course, you don’t need to invest your last bit of money in mining.

Cryptocurrencies are growing rapidly all over the world – and the process seems to be irreversible. So join in.
