Such an initiative has angered other heirs of the artist, who have stated that the issued NFT-tokens can not be considered as the official works of Picasso. However, according to the recent words of Marina Picasso, which she announced in her video on YouTube, Florian and she won't refuse to issue tokens, i.e. to release them. What's more, their idea is already supported by her uncle Claude Picasso.

What’s being sold in the form of NFTs

Picasso’s NFT-collection entitled “Man and the Beat” consists of 1011 tokens, each of which is associated with a unique video recording of the artist’s artwork that was previously unavailable to the public. Marina Picasso sees NFT as a technology that opens up exciting possibilities. Here’s her quote from a YouTube video published by the news outlet Decrypt

I have a 30-year-old son who is very passionate about NFT. I explored the field further and realised that it is a modern technology that allows us to ‘connect’ with art. And this is how my son and I decided to create our first NFT collection.

Accordingly, up until her son's initiative Marina was not interested in the subject, but then she studied it and was happy with the situation. And it is not hard to understand her. After all, unique tokens give people full ownership over something, which in this case is a work of art. Since the private key of a cryptocurrency address cannot be guessed, NFT collectors' purchases in this case are protected by cryptography. That means that it is essentially impossible to challenge the ownership of the owner of a particular address.

In addition, because the blockchain is transparent, anyone can study it and see who bought a certain token, when and under what conditions.

Picasso’s work in the form of NFT

Unfortunately, the NFT collection still has serious problems with demand from buyers. It’s all down to the relatively high price of issuing tokens, which is 2 ETH or approximately $5,800, as well as initial criticism from Claude Picasso. As a reminder, he is the head of Picasso Administration, an organisation dedicated to preserving the famous artist’s legacy.

Here is a fresh video of Marina Picasso. We recommend watching it to better understand what’s going on in the niche, if you perceive a foreign language by ear.

The tokens are sold on the Origin Protocol platform. Some time after the family conflict not much has changed: Marina Picasso managed to sell about 10 percent of the collection. Perhaps this will change in the future, as Claude Picasso is now already in favour of issuing tokens. Although the overall negative background around the set of unique tokens is clearly affecting what is happening and hindering successful sales.

We think the situation with NFT based on Pablo Picasso's unpublished works seems odd. Obviously, the authors of the release of the collection had to agree in advance with the relatives in order to avoid criticism and loud statements that the collection does not deserve the right to exist. That being said, so far the idea of launching an NFT set looks more like people wanting to cash in on the high-profile name of an artist who happens to be a relative of theirs. However, given the present circumstances, the situation could surely change.
