Kevin O'Leary does mention the subject of cryptocurrencies regularly. For example, in February 2022, he named "Bitcoin's main problem". According to the investor, it is "dirty BTC", i.e. coins that have been mined using electricity generated by environmentally damaging power plants.

Back in March 2021, he said that bitcoins made in China were unlikely to be in demand because of active human rights abuses in the country. As you can see now, that prediction was wrong. Read more about it in a separate article.

Note that Kevin is not the only rich man who owns cryptocurrencies. This morning, Tesla CEO Elon Musk recalled his connection to coins. He posted tweets on the subject of inflation before getting into a conversation with MicroStrategy CEO Michael Saylor. In the end, Ilon remarked that he still keeps his bitcoins, ethers and DOGE, with no plans to sell them.

However, given the entrepreneur’s fortune, it doesn’t make much sense.

Which celebrities invest in cryptocurrencies?

In early 2021, well-known investor Kevin O’Leary started talking positively about BTC, and after a short time even allocated 3% of his portfolio to invest in the coin. In his recent interview, O’Leary admitted that he gradually built up the share of cryptocurrencies in his portfolio to 20 per cent. In other words, he has continued to increase his own investments in digital assets, and has done so more aggressively compared to other asset categories.

Here’s O’Leary’s rejoinder, in which he shares his view of the situation.

I have millions of dollars in crypto. Cryptocurrencies and blockchain projects make up 20 per cent of my portfolio.

And because he used to only allocate 3 per cent to coins, the value of the entrepreneur's cryptocurrencies has now increased almost sevenfold in dollars. It is also possible to sell other equity-type assets here, but it is hard to believe that they have declined on such a scale. It is therefore safe to assume that Kevin has significantly increased his investments in crypto, rather than just waiting for coins to appreciate.

Investor Kevin O’Leary

According to CryptoPotato sources, O’Leary compares buying Bitcoin to investing in shares of large tech companies like Microsoft or Google. That is, in the long term, such investments should yield a notable return with relatively low risks, the expert believes. In addition to Bitcoin, the showman also actively buys Etherium, Solana and Avalanche.

Here’s his take on the situation.

You need to diversify. I have at least 32 different positions, including shares and a stake in the FTX crypto exchange itself – I support its initiatives. You don’t know who will win this race. Will it be Etherium, or Solana and Avalanche? I’m investing in all options.

In other words, the investor assumes that next-generation blockchains will gradually catch the attention of investors in the future. Still, they feature lower fees and faster speeds, while Etherium requires a few dollars for transfers, even though the overall level of fees is lower.

O’Leary is also co-host of the financial TV show Shark Tank

In addition, the renowned investor is also looking at unique tokens. He has previously stated that NFT has huge potential in terms of both returns and overall global adoption. True, O’Leary never disclosed what NFT collections he currently owns, if any at all. It’s likely that for now he’s just past the denial stage and already recognises the prospects of NFT tokens, but still hasn’t allocated money to this asset category.

We think Kevin O'Leary's example illustrates just how much the old-school investor's perspective on digital assets can change. In this case, the millionaire radically changed his attitude to crypto and was not afraid to allocate 20 percent of his overall investment portfolio to it. And as O'Leary's adventures in the world of decentralized assets continue, we can assume that this figure will only increase over time.
