Note that such luxury devices are not new to the cryptocurrency industry. For example, in February 2022, French hardware wallet maker Ledger announced a partnership with renowned watchmaker Hublot. The partnership ended up creating 50 custom Ledger Nano X devices that were sold exclusively with the Big Bang Unico Ledger watch. Moreover, this set will cost 28,900 euros.

Despite the serious price tag, all the watch units are already sold out. Which means there’s a good chance that the same thing will happen to this piece of clothing.

What cryptocurrency investors are buying

The main feature of the Bitsneaks is the flexible LED display on the trainer, which shows the Bitcoin price and the height of the cryptocurrency unit. The data is updated in real time thanks to an internet connection. Bitrefill founder and CEO Sergey Kotlyar commented on the idea of the project with a dose of humour in an interview with the news outlet Decrypt. Here’s his line.

The fact that we managed to defeat giants like Nike and created something which everybody considered impossible is one more proof of the determination of our team. Purposefulness in that it is trying to achieve something really stupid.

In other words, the developers of the project don't see it as something vital. However, as a fun accessory for wealthy cryptocurrency enthusiasts, it will do just fine.

Apart from the trainers themselves, the case in which they are delivered to the buyer is also interesting. In it, he can find a small full Bitcoin network node. It is capable of displaying a mempool, i.e. a queue of actual transactions, and even mining coins. Admittedly, the processing power of such a device is very low and it is unlikely that it can cover the electricity costs of its operation at all.

Spencer Dinwiddie also left a comment about the project.

I have always strived to be the cutting edge and revolutionary leader in the cryptocurrency world. The opportunity to develop the world’s most high-tech trainers with Bitrefill is an experience of a lifetime.

Here’s a video in which you can see the unusual shoe model.

According to Kotlar, the Bitsneaks project came about almost six months ago based on the idea that the cryptocurrency community needed to present something very original. He continues.

Most people who “live Bitcoin” do so of their own volition. And while we can’t buy Superbowl ads or sponsor Formula One like our competitors, we have the courage, creativity and mad programming skills. So we decided to create something to help cryptocurrency enthusiasts stand out.

Bitrefill’s CEO also shared the challenges his team faced. It turns out that they had to design almost every detail of the shoe and electronics parts themselves.

Not only the shoe itself, which is an amazing feat of engineering, but everything from the box to the controller application to the server, we had to create from scratch.

Unfortunately, the cost of “cryptocurrencies” may not be affordable for every crypto-enthusiast. At the moment, their price is set at 1 BTC, or around $40,000. Kotlyar himself, though, reassures us that such a purchase is worth the money.

Just like we think our services on Bitrefill should be ten times better than our competitors, we wanted our trainers to be ten times cooler than everything else.

On the official Bitsneaks website, customers can leave their email address to be the first to know about the launch of the range. Unfortunately, there’s no word yet on how many pairs of trainers it’s limited to. It’s possible that on the secondary market, the value of Bitsneaks will rise well above 1 BTC – especially if there are very few such shoes in the world.

We believe this pair of shoes will not go unnoticed by cryptocurrency investors. And while the price tag of Bitsneaks is extremely high even when compared to high-end brands, coin lovers have plenty of money. As evidence of this, one might recall the sale of the world's first NFT token from Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey. It sold for $2.9 million in March 2021, but is now only being offered for $12,700. Which means investors will also have a couple of tens of thousands of dollars for the trainer.
