Traditionally, we'll start with an explanation. Bored Ape Yacht Club is the most expensive collection of NFT tokens. As of today, the minimum value of a representative of the line is 114 ethers or $312,000. Here is the corresponding ranking according to the NFT Price Floor platform.

Ranking of the most expensive NFT tokens in the cryptocurrency industry

The project is not limited to NFTs alone. In addition to non-interchangeable tokens, it already has an ApeCoin token, in addition the developers are working towards Metavsels, which also adds value to the project. The creators end up with an entire ecosystem.

Because of this, all sorts of fake token giveaways and NFTs that are supposedly linked to Bored Ape Yacht Club are in demand. The reason for this is clear: users know about the rising price of BAYC representatives, so they hope to get hold of something related to the project. And to do so before anyone else.

As a result, the rush is what puts investors on the hook for scammers. The latter have programming skills, so they create tokens with malicious code. Most often, the victim is made to sign a transaction ostensibly to receive new NFTs, but at the same time they also unknowingly allow the smart contract to perform other actions with the address. For example, they send NFTs and tokens to the fraudsters' address, which is usually the end of it.

Hacker

As experts point out, this scheme is now spreading even further.

How crypto-assets are stolen

Malwarebytes has documented that the most common tactic used by scammers is to use fake websites pretending to be one of the real platforms. The most “vulnerable” category for scammers are active members of the already mentioned NFT series Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC), the hype around which hasn’t subsided for months.

The hype is so huge that even billionaire and current Twitter owner Ilon Musk has joined the BAYC token holders’ hangout. Yesterday he changed his social media profile avatar to a collage of several BAYC tokens. However, some time later the avatar disappeared and Musk put up a different image.

In addition, Malwarebytes experts also warn of an increase in the number of phishing offers offering to directly connect their cryptocurrency wallet. Doing so is by no means an option, as in this way attackers can steal all funds and NFT from the victim’s cryptocurrency wallet. According to Cointelegraph, scammers’ tools also include malicious links and files that can be distributed to victims in the form of spam, including via Twitter.

The conclusion to this is obvious: to ensure the safety of your tokens, don't click on links from strangers, and don't believe in making a quick buck on a popular topic, because in the current community it is almost impossible to be among the first on something hype. Finally, don't sign transactions on unfamiliar sites, because later the coins may simply disappear from the address. It is also ideal to use a hardware wallet, as in this case you will need to confirm transactions manually.

Phishing site

The screenshot above shows a phishing attempt in which scammers created a website offering visitors to receive up to ten unique Bull and Ape tokens. However, as with any other phishing site, when the user tries to take advantage of the seemingly lucrative offer, they are prompted for a Sid phrase to gain control of the victim’s tokenized address.

It’s also worth looking out for fake social networking profiles of scammers. Even if they have a verification tick, it does not mean that the account actually belongs to a real person or organisation. Scammers often disable comments on their posts to hide the fraud.

It is also important to keep in mind that the official profiles of various popular NFT platforms may also be compromised. At least with the Discord channel Bored Ape Yacht Club this has already happened.

NFT-court

We believe that this popularity of the NFT-token topic among fraudsters is due to the hype around non-interchangeable tokens. After all, even global stars like Eminem or Jimmy Fallon have already put NFT on their Twitter avatars, which means people outside the cryptocurrency community are aware of what's going on as well. They do want to capitalise on the topic, but due to lack of experience they fall for the tricks of the scammers. And since newcomers will appear all the time, it will not be possible to completely solve this problem.
