How do I add an Ethereum PoW cryptocurrency network to my MetaMask wallet?
Today, the Ethereum network successfully switched to the PoS consensus algorithm. Hours later, anonymous developers forked the Eth blockchain and launched Ethereum PoW. This is essentially the same blockchain that continued its existence on Proof-of-Stake or Proof-of-Work consensus, but only on Proof-of-Work. And since it’s a fork, that means ETH holders on wallets can access ETHW coin on the alternative chain. Let’s try to reach them with the MetaMask wallet.
Traditionally, we'll start with the theory. New coins are not eirdroped to users, and there is no need to request them separately either. In fact, we have a new blockchain that coincides with the situation on the Etherium network until the latter's transition to PoS.
The format of the address along with the private keys also match. Consequently, ETH owners only need to run their own wallet and add another network, logging in with their existing account.
As you can easily guess, you need to learn how to add a new network.
How to add a new network and user token in MetaMask
Let’s go through the process of adding a new network in the popular MetaMask wallet. More precisely, we are talking about adding a user token.
So, we open the wallet and enter the password to unlock it.
If you are not yet familiar with MetaMask, go to the official website, download the extension and create a wallet. But in this case it's a fork, you have to import the address with a cid-phrase - or connect a hardware wallet, which is a safer option.
The wallet interface is familiar. It looks like this.
Then you click on the colored circle in the upper right corner and go to “Settings”. This is the bottom-most item on the menu.
You will find the “Networks” option and press “Add network” in the top right corner.
At this stage, we will need the settings. We take them from the official tweet of the Ethereum PoW project on Twitter.
Let’s duplicate them below for convenience. Here are the settings for adding the Ethereum PoW network to MetaMask:
- Network name – ETHW-mainnet
- New RPC URL – https://mainnet.ethereumpow.org
- Chain ID – 10001
- Currency symbol – ETHW
- Block Explorer URL – https://mainnet.ethwscan.com
Now enter these data into the corresponding fields in MetaMask.
That’s all – save the new network. Next, the wallet will try to connect to it.
It was not possible to connect to the network at first. After a few seconds, MetaMask gave an error.
Repeated data entry, VPN and other tricks have not helped so far, so we wait for responses from developers. At the same time, judging by the responses on Twitter, some people were still able to connect.
To make it clearer, let’s try adding another network. For example, let’s try Fantom. Specify the required data and press “Save”.
Connection has been successfully established. A new network is now added to MetaMask, and its native token FTM has replaced ETH in the wallet field.
Ideally with Ethereum PoW everything should work right the first time. If anything, please drop by the 2Miners chat room – we will discuss what is going on together.
How to add a new network to MetaMask in one click
As a bonus, it is worth mentioning the resource ChainList, which allows you to add a custom token to MetaMask in one click.
All you need to do is find the right network and add it by connecting a wallet. Here, the platform will add the configuration of the blockchain itself, after which you can interact with it.
Note that you can already mine ETHW on the 2Miners pool. All the information is listed here.
What is the problem with adding Ethereum PoW network to MetaMask is unknown. We want to believe that the developers are aware of this and soon will fix the problem for all users. Anyway, the principle of adding user token in this wallet remains the same, and even with different settings.
