On 16 January 2024, Solana Mobile employees launched a pre-order for the second generation of the smartphone. Details about it were not reported, but the time period for the launch was specified – it became 2025.

Solana Mobile representatives claim that pre-sales of the new phone have already exceeded 140 thousand units in 57 countries. The Seeker is created in collaboration with Fxtec and will be released in mid-2025, Solana Mobile CEO Emmett Hollier told The Block.

Here’s a rejoinder on the matter.

The response to the launch of Chapter Two is remarkable – over 140,000 pre-orders and hype within the community. It’s like all the investors have come together to support the mission of mobile Web3.

One of the reasons for the hype around the device is the active accrual of aidrops to buyers of the first generation of the device. The same was true for users who pre-ordered the novelty.

Inspiration for the prefix Seeker, which translates as “seeker” in the name of the device the company drew from a quote by the late English writer and orator Alan Watts. The quote is cited by Decrypt.

A seeker is someone who recognises the existence of something more than meets the eye, who is unafraid and chooses to embrace the unknown.

In Hollier’s opinion, the marketers did an excellent job.

We believe that the name accurately captures the character of both the device and the people who use it. If the name Saga was defined by the history of the Web3 sphere on Solana, then the name Seeker speaks to what the device is capable of.

The smartphone can be pre-ordered as an “early founder” status for $450 before the Solana Breakpoint conference, which starts today in Singapore and ends on 21 September. After that date, the price will revert to $500, Hollier noted.

The price of the first Saga phone was $1,000 at launch, but was later reduced to $599 after the device’s failed attempts to gain popularity. All that changed in December 2023 when the price of the Solana-based meme token Bonk skyrocketed several times, thus opening up a money-making opportunity.

The thing is that buyers of Solana Saga were credited with 30 million BONK tokens, which made the price of this airdrop in mid-December confidently exceeded the price of the device itself. The limited stock of 20 thousand phones was quickly sold out in the US and Europe.

In April, pre-sale demand for Chapter Two devices spiked: this time after two “cat-themed” memcoin airdrops briefly covered the cost of the device. According to Solana Floor, the accrued “Maneki” and “Cat in a Dogs World” tokens reached the $459 level, while the phone itself could initially be pre-ordered for $450.

For example, here is our screenshot of the accrued coins. As you can see, the value of these two tokens did exceed the pre-order price, with other small giveaways of $15-$50 we received in the spring.

How exactly did the developers know who had pre-ordered? The thing is that such users - and we included - received a unique NFT to the address from which the payment for the device was made. Tokens belong to the Soulbound category, i.e. they are non-transferable. So developers only need to extract a list of addresses on the blockchain that hold that NFT.

Incidentally, this time the relatively low price of the Solana Seeker is part of a marketing campaign, Hollier noted.

We’ve set a very aggressive price because we want the device to be affordable to grow the ecosystem. Not necessarily because we think it’s some kind of step backwards.

Full specifications of the new product have not yet been released. According to Hollier, that Solana Seeker will get a brighter “flagship display” and a longer-lasting battery compared to the Saga, as well as “better cameras,” including a new third sensor placed on the back.

More specifically, we’re talking about a 6.36-inch display, 8GB of RAM, and a 108 and 32 megapixel camera combination.

In terms of performance, he suggested that it will be a “significant step up from the Saga”. The Seeker’s hardware is also “lighter and smaller” than the Saga. Plus, it’s important to consider that many users plan to use it as an add-on device, rather than replacing their primary phone with it.

However, amidst all the changes, some elements of the Seeker are very similar to the Saga. Cryptocurrency integration is once again handled by Seed Vault, a customised storage solution created within the phone’s secure environment. This time it’s visually highlighted in the phone’s design, as seen in the product shots, in the form of a glossy cutout wrapped around the right side of the frame.

In addition to the Seed Vault itself, Solana Mobile representatives worked with Solflare to develop a wallet specifically for Seeker that promises a “better user experience” than the wallets on Saga, Hollier noted.

It looks like the Solana Seeker will be a logical continuation of the smartwatch story from Solana Mobile. So far, the device promises a more confident interaction with digital assets and the Web3 sphere in general. Well, airdrops will contribute to additional hype around the novelty.
