Developer Peter Todd spoke about the changes in his life after being named the creator of Bitcoin
October was an extremely busy month for one of the Bitcoin Core developers, Peter Todd, who was named as the alleged real creator of Bitcoin in a new documentary from HBO. The latter’s director Cullen Hoback has cast Todd as the man who has been hiding behind the mask of anonymous BTC developer Satoshi Nakamoto all along. Todd himself denies such claims, but the film’s release has already drawn a lot of unnecessary attention to the developer. Of course, it is able to create risks for the developer’s life, although Todd claims that there are no problems.
Cryptocurrency enthusiasts and people outside the industry have been searching for Satoshi Nakamoto for a long time. Yet the developer’s identity has remained unknown since the Bitcoin blockchain was launched on 3 January 2009. Since then, the developer has been building the blockchain community, posting on the Bitcoin Talk forum and communicating with other developers via email. Satoshi then went missing, and his first and last name remain unknown.
Most importantly, Nakamoto managed to get a huge amount of bitcoins as a reward for mining during the time he was active. At first, Satoshi was the only miner on the network and received 50 BTC per block. It is believed that he managed to accumulate approximately 1.1 million bitcoins.
The creator of the first cryptocurrency hasn’t touched his digital assets since he stopped being active in public. However, he may still own the private keys to the addresses he uses.
That’s why the blockchain community didn’t appreciate the idea of premiering such a film revealing Satoshi’s alleged real identity. Still, some criminals may well want to test this theory and try to rob Todd.
Usually, attempts to beat the passwords to his hardware wallets or other such combinations out of the victim are accompanied by torture. So the HBO premiere does create risks for the programmer.
Who is the real Satoshi Nakamoto?
Peter Todd gave an exclusive interview to Decrypt journalists. In it, the developer noted that the day before he was publicly and globally named as the person who could theoretically have the equivalent of $74.4 billion in cryptocurrency at his disposal.
This is roughly how much the first bitcoins mined by Satoshi Nakamoto himself are currently worth. Here’s his commentary on what’s going on.
I have taken some security measures. But it’s not a good idea to publicly talk about what exactly I did. It’s best to leave the bad guys guessing.
The early member of the cryptocurrency community added that he is not hiding and has not been hiding. Moreover, Todd attended a blockchain conference in Lugano, Switzerland, a few days ago, where, among other things, a statue was unveiled in honour of the anonymous creator of the first cryptocurrency.
Peter said he plans to speak at five more events around the world in the coming weeks.
Most importantly, Todd said he has yet to be spotted or pestered with questions in public by crypto enthusiasts who recognised him from the HBO documentary. Here’s a line to that effect.
One thing that helped this was refusing to do audio and video interviews with any of the many journalists who asked me to do so.
As journalists have noted, this is not the first time Todd has been in the public spotlight. Still, the developer has been associated with Bitcoin since its inception, and he has previously been named as a potential creator of the world’s first cryptocurrency.

Director Cullen Hoback claimed in the film that several circumstantial clues pointed to Todd’s identity as Satoshi, including a supposed similarity between the writing styles of both men.
Hoback was also convinced that Todd’s teenage experimentation with the concept of digital currency was particularly suspicious – as was a post on the Bitcointalk forum, which the film claimed was allegedly made accidentally on the wrong account and should have been posted by Satoshi, not Todd.
Many members of the crypto community were not convinced by these arguments. Well, when Hoback presented them to Todd himself, he immediately rejected them as “ridiculous.”
However, the director does not give up: in the public space, he continues to claim that Peter Todd allegedly has a direct relation to the creation of Bitcoin. However, these claims are still unsupported by real evidence and simply put Todd in danger once again.
As experts note, the real identity of Satoshi Nakamoto is extremely interesting for both ordinary people and entire government structures. Even a trivial robbery has become a serious problem for Todd, as the release of the documentary can make attackers think about whether Peter really does not have several tens of billions of dollars in crypto.
In the end, the film's premiere on HBO only benefited its creators. The cryptocurrency community did not receive convincing evidence that Peter Todd is really Satoshi Nakamoto. Well, the developer himself is now forced to take certain security measures, which he predictably did not disclose.
