A Canadian crypto investor is forced into hiding after a failed attempt to steal his bitcoins. What happened?
Experienced users of cryptocurrencies recommend not telling outsiders about their connection to the world of coins. Still, the value of digital assets usually rises sharply during bullruns, because of which their holder may be in the sight of robbers. Alas, attempts to steal crypto by kidnapping holders are happening right now, which means investors should be cautious.
How money is stolen from cryptocurrencies
Note that coins are also lost remotely. The most high-profile such case at the end of 2024 was the loss of 10 bitcoins worth a million dollars and a collection of NFT worth 1.5 million.
The peculiarity of the case was that the investor stored private keys to cryptocurrency addresses using a Ledger Nano S hardware wallet. In theory, he did everything right, because such devices isolate important combinations and do not shine them on the Internet, so hackers are unable to empty the wallet of a potential victim.
However, the user still lost a huge stockpile of crypto assets. It turned out that in February 2022, he signed a malicious transaction that gave fraudsters access to his address. Although the hackers took their time with the theft for some unknown reason, they did eventually get their hands on 2.5 million worth of coins and unique tokens.
Unfortunately, some people are willing to go to physical violence in real life to get their hands on other people’s bitcoins.
Why you shouldn’t tell people about your cryptocurrencies
An unpleasant situation was reported by a resident of Canada, who is a part-time moderator of a local forum about cryptocurrencies. He claims that he has to rent numerous flats through Airbnb and constantly change his place of residence in order not to fall into the hands of robbers.
The man moves with his family as their members are also in danger. Well, the reason for the escape was a failed attempt to kidnap cryptoinvestors in order to force the victim to send his bitcoins to the addresses of scammers.
The investor shared the details of what was going on with La Presse journalists. According to him, the would-be kidnappers were apparently preparing to use violence before he and his family could leave the residence.
Here’s a line on the matter, as quoted by Cointelegraph.
The guys had the tools to torture me. They had prepared a 2 by 2 foot tarpaulin with a hole in the middle and green hoses around it. They were going to use it to cut off my limb and stop the bleeding. That’s a prohibitive level of violence.
